Does Brainspotting Work?
Yes, Brainspotting really works!
Brainspotting can help rewire your brain and regulate your nervous system in ways that can be more direct than talk therapy. Brainspotting is a somatic therapy which allows our bodies to express, process, and release difficult experiences. It takes a mind-body approach to trauma because our minds and our bodies are one so what happens to one affects the other. Regulating our nervous systems cannot simply be done by talking alone. Trauma can be like an injury to the body and simply talking about it is not always enough to heal.
I have helped many clients achieve results that they never believed were possible. Some things clients have shared include:
They have been in therapy for years and haven't been able to work through concerns like they have through Brainspotting.
Feeling relief even after one Brainspotting session that they have not felt after years of talk therapy.
Experienced lasting results that they still feel months, even years after Brainspotting.
Thinking about situations differently than they had before.
Time and Cost Effectiveness
Brainspotting Intensives can be a big time and financial investment. However, a Brainspotting Intensive can give you the results you would get from months or even years of therapy in a shorter time frame. If you add up the cost of weekly therapy, a Brainspotting Intensive is more cost effective in the long run. Instead of waiting months, it’s possible to get the same results in a day!
When I first started offering Brainspotting Intensives, I talked with current clients about the option to book one. I had clients I have worked with for 1-2 years in talk therapy complete a Brainspotting Intensive in one day and make progress with concerns we were trying to chip away at for the entire time we worked together. It helped them get past stuck points which made our talk therapy sessions more effective. These clients were amazed at how much they progressed in a short period of time and were pleasantly surprised with how much better they felt and it actually lasted for months to come.
Client’s Stories
Client 1:
I worked with a client who struggled with setting boundaries at work. She would feel guilty and like she was a bad person if she did not go above and beyond without recognition or compensation. Her work stress was not even the main concern she had come into therapy for, but it was blocking progress she wanted to make because it was something she was dealing with on a regular basis. It took up so much of her capacity that she was not able to give her other concerns the time they required in therapy.
After she completed a Brainspotting Intensive, she was able to set and maintain her boundaries at work without feeling guilty. She felt that people respected her more and it did not cause issues at work any longer. Even months after the Intensive, she would share how she was able to continue upholding her boundaries without a second thought. While that was happening, we were able to make significant progress with her original concerns that she sought therapy for.
Client 2:
Another client experienced childhood trauma that caused a difficult relationship with her father. She did not want to cut ties with him, rather, her goal was to have a cordial relationship and no longer feel triggered when she would see him. Through Brainspotting, this client worked through some difficult memories and emotions, and afterwards reported immense relief and felt much lighter. A couple weeks later when she visited her family, she shared that it was a lot less triggering and even had a nice quiet moment with her dad.
My Experience Brainspotting as a Client
I have also done Brainspotting as a client as well and I have experienced real change for myself. I completed a Brainspotting Intensive in September 2023 and still feel the benefits from over 2 years ago now. I worked through some issues that had been on my mind for years and it was hard to let go of and just move on from. However, a Brainspotting Intensive helped me resolve those issues and finally be able to move past them.
Brainspotting vs Talk Therapy
With a Brainspotting Intensive, you do all the hard work in session while you have your therapist’s support. Your nervous system rewires itself and your brain creates new neural pathways to process previous experiences, understand them, and implement new ways of thinking.
In traditional talk therapy, the hard work happens in and outside of session and it is a continuous processing and application of what you have learned. It’s like going to class and learning from the teacher, then going home and practicing what you’ve learned and continuing to study it so that it can become better understood and more deeply engrained. So, when you get to the exam, you can more easily remember what you learned and apply it.
Once you complete a Brainspotting Intensive, you are able to apply what you have gotten out of the session like second nature in your life. You don’t have to face the same issue multiple times, like practice, before you get the hang of things and can more easily apply your insights and skills you have learned.
Does Brainspotting work virtually?
Yes!
Brainspotting utilizes your eye positioning which you can do in your own environment at home. All parts of the session stays the same as it would happen in person. For more information on what a Brainspotting session looks like you can read this blog post or watch this video.
My training, some of which was taught by the founder, was completed online during the pandemic. We were informed that brainspotting can be just as effective virtually. I have conducted the majority of my sessions virtually and all the clients I have worked with expressed that it was beneficial and provided relief.
Consultations are a great way to see if an intensive is right for you.
